Can you imagine seeing letters, shapes, and numbers in color? How about tasting a word when your hear it, or see a name in all different colors around it. Well Mia does from A Mango Shaped Space. She doesn't tell anyone about what she sees because she notices that she was only one seeing the colors. What she has is synesthesia.
The main character, Mia found out she had synesthesia when she was in 3rd grade. She went up to the chalkboard to solve a math problem. When she was up there, she saw that the numbers were in different colors. She was confused and asked if she could change the numbers to the right color. Everyone started to giggle and then laughed out loud. They started calling her a freak! When that was all over she got in trouble for making up something like that. She didn't tell anyone about the synesthesia. Now that she in 8th grade, she has algebra. Mia has trouble with math because the numbers and letters look the same. She also has problems in French class too. These are some of the challenges that Mia faces, but there are some that are worse. She has to say somethings about her synesthesia and it creates problems. Also, Mia's cat, Mango is big in the story too. He is mentioned a lot and is in certain events.
To me, this book is interesting book. I liked it because it gave me a lot of information about synesthesia. This book helped me on my researched about synesthesia. I recommend this book to any gender because it's entertaining a funny. This book will help you in research for a class essay or project. I give this book a thumbs up and on a scale to 1 to 5. I give it a 4.

Mia Winchell is her name, and for a time, she couldn't even get to her locker with out with out being asked that one question...What color is my name? it all started in 3rd grade with the chalk board incident. heck, she sounded so honest to me but not to some people in that school. but now, if you haven't guessed already, Mia is the newest Synesthete.
Now in 8th grade, Mia must conceal her most guarded secret yet another year. even though she is close to failing algebra, and she is having a tough time in french. but some hurdles are larger than others, and Mia knows that all to well. Mia's cat Mango play a key roll in this book at times along with her family. Beth, Mia's older sister. Zach, Mia's younger...weirder brother. Mia's Mom and Dad and Roger, Mia's project partner.
To me this book was a "different-than-what-im-used-to" kind of book. this book is also at times will make you feel like youve been punched in the gut and at other times, it will make you feel like draining your eyes. this book is a real helper if you want to start to know about synesthesia and it helped me a lot. i would recommend this book to any one because it is funny yet sad at times. if i were to rate this book, i would rate it a 9.5 out of 10 because the author knows how to get you funny bone going or you tear ducts running.

Have you as a little kid have ever drawn a picture consisting nothing but colors? Thinking that you could live in that special world where everything is just color, colors everywhere. You thought that this world was perfect and imaginary, except for the fact that this world you're dreaming of, it exists, and people are suffering in it. In this real-life world the people with this disability called synesthesia are suffering, and that's exactly Mia Winchell is going through in the book, A Mango Shaped Space.
If people thought being a thirteen year old girl was tough, then it just got even more difficult for Mia Winchell. Mia Winchell must learn how to deal with the rare and genetic brain disability synesthesia. Mia faces so many difficult challenges in this tale that tells a thirteen year old's story on how to live with synesthesia. Mia has her friend Jenna to stick with her all the way. Mia, with a heavy heart must also has to suffer the loss of what she cherished most of all. Mia is a new person in this unfamiliar world of synesthesia.
This book will tell you of many challenges that the main character faces. This story will make you shed tears, learn deep secrets, and teach you about separation. This book can be very informative
to people who would want to learn more about this rare disability. If I were to rate this on a scale of one to ten, I would strictly give it a seven. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers who enjoy the adventurous and melancholy kind of book.
